Raw-metal signals matter, but they do not equal pipe price

On July 21, 2026, the London Metal Exchange showed nickel around the low-to-mid US$16,000s per metric tonne across its cash and three-month reference figures. Nickel is only one component of Type 316: the grade also contains chromium and molybdenum, while the pipe price adds steelmaking, forming, welding or piercing, heat treatment, finishing, inspection, commercial margin and logistics.

Outokumpu publishes monthly alloy-surcharge reports by grade, product family and currency. MEPS also notes that European stainless transactions may use either the traditional base-price-plus-alloy-surcharge mechanism or an all-inclusive effective price. Therefore, do not add an online nickel quote to a guessed conversion fee and call the result a pipe quotation.

How to calculate 316 pipe weight per meter

A per-kilogram quote becomes useful only after you know the pipe’s mass. For a circular pipe with outside diameter OD, wall thickness t and density ρ, theoretical mass per meter is based on the annular cross-sectional area.

Use OD and wall thickness in millimetres and density in g/cm³. The calculator defaults to 8.00 g/cm³, consistent with Outokumpu’s published density for 316L/4404. Actual order mass can differ because standards allow dimensional and mass tolerances.

Pipe vs tube

NPS is a nominal pipe-size system; it is not the measured outside diameter. ASME B36.19M standardizes dimensions for welded and seamless wrought stainless pipe. Tubing is commonly ordered by actual OD and wall, so never substitute a tube dimension table for a pipe schedule without checking the governing specification.

Welded vs seamless 316 pipe: price follows process and specification

ASTM A312/A312M covers seamless, straight-seam welded and heavily cold-worked welded austenitic stainless steel pipe for high-temperature and general corrosive service. The standard’s scope is important: it proves that both welded and seamless routes can be legitimate specified products. It does not say one construction is automatically correct for every pressure, temperature or corrosion duty.

Why 316L is common in welded systems

Outokumpu describes 316L/4404 as a low-carbon alternative whose lower carbon content minimizes carbide precipitation from heat input, improving resistance to intergranular corrosion. This is a material-selection advantage—not proof that every “316L” supplier quote has identical quality or documentation.

Specification before price

The standard and acceptance scope define what you are buying

For many industrial piping applications, ASTM A312/A312M is a central material specification for austenitic stainless pipe. It covers seamless, straight-seam welded and heavily cold-worked welded products, with requirements for chemistry, heat treatment, mechanical properties and testing. ASME B36.19M supplies standardized stainless-pipe dimensions.

However, a complete order may also invoke a construction code, grade suffix, supplementary testing, purchaser inspection, surface requirement, end preparation and documentation. Sanitary tubing, instrumentation tubing and heat-exchanger tubing may fall under different standards. Calling every round 316 product “A312 pipe” creates comparison errors.

Passivation is specification-dependent

ASTM A967/A967M defines several chemical and electrochemical passivation treatments plus verification tests. It does not declare one treatment mandatory for every stainless pipe application. Include passivation only when the project specification, fabrication condition or acceptance plan requires it.

An EXW price can look cheaper than a delivered price while producing a higher total cost. Normalize every quote to the same quantity, currency, delivery point and responsibility split. Record exchange-rate date separately when quotes use different currencies.
