Laser Cleaning Service Pricing: Hourly vs Per Job

Use hourly pricing when contamination, access, coating history, or the required finish is uncertain. Use per-job pricing when the quantity, starting condition, acceptance standard, and production rate have been proven on a representative sample.

For many industrial jobs, the safest structure is hybrid: fixed mobilization and a fixed tested scope, plus pre-agreed hourly or unit rates for documented changes.

Direct answer

There is no responsible universal laser cleaning rate card

A square meter of light oxide on an open flat panel is not the same job as a square meter of heavy corrosion inside corners, at height, or under an uncertain legacy coating. Compare quotes only after the quantity, condition, access, target finish, safety controls, inspection, and change rules match.

A low hourly rate can produce a high invoice if output is poor or delays are not controlled. A low lump sum can also become expensive if the quote excludes travel, containment, extraction, inspection, or difficult areas. The price model should follow the quality of information available before work starts.

What a laser cleaning service quote is actually buying

A professional quote is not laser-on time multiplied by a number. It pays for the full path from arrival to accepted handover. Small jobs can be dominated by setup. Field work can be dominated by access and controlled-area planning. Repetitive shop work can spread those costs across many parts.

Laser ablation can remove rust, paint, coatings, oil, adhesives, and other contaminants, but those materials do not behave the same way. A simple way to compare laser cleaning costs

The buyer does not need the supplier's private accounting. The buyer does need every major cost category to be visible. The supplier, meanwhile, needs a realistic billable-hour model so a busy schedule does not hide unprofitable work.

Buyer-side hourly quote formula

Total quote = mobilization + (approved on-site hours x hourly rate) + travel or standby + access equipment + safety and extraction + inspection and records + applicable waste or taxesUse the same line items when comparing a fixed quote. They are still present even if the supplier has bundled them into one number.

Provider-side cost floor

Machine wattage matters, but it is rarely the strongest pricing input by itself. The removed layer, protected substrate, geometry, access, accepted end state, and site controls usually change qualified output more directly.

Make fixed pricing supplier-friendly

Attach the part list or area map, starting-condition classes, accepted sample, access plan, working hours, inspection, and exclusions to the purchase order. If the buyer changes the finish standard, quantity, access, or schedule, the change should activate a known rate or new approval.

Open-beam high-power laser work can require a controlled area, trained and authorized personnel, beam management, task-specific eyewear, fire controls, and airborne-contaminant assessment.

Price for profitable capacity, not just laser-on minutes

A service business can look busy and still lose money if travel, setup, safety, quoting, maintenance, and idle capacity are excluded from the hourly floor. Build the rate from realistic billable hours, then use a minimum charge or mobilization fee so small jobs pay their share of setup.

Include equipment ownership, labor burden, insurance, facility, service, sales, travel administration, safety equipment, extraction, maintenance, utilities, and normal consumables.
