What does 6061 aluminum sheet cost per kilogram?
There is no single global 6061-T6 sheet price. A defensible comparison starts with a dated metal benchmark, then adds regional premium, alloying, rolling, heat treatment, finish, service, logistics and taxes. Public retail listings show the final convenience price; wholesale contracts often expose more of the underlying formula.

A mill may quote FOB by theoretical weight and require a production lot. A retailer may include a cut size, protective film, individual handling and fast dispatch. Normalize Incoterm, destination, actual weight, tolerance, certificate, cut service, packaging, tax and lead time before choosing the lower number.
What sits between primary aluminum and a finished 6061 sheet?
The LME price is widely used as a global reference for physical aluminum contracts, but it represents exchange-grade aluminum—not your finished sheet. A useful quote review separates every layer that can move independently.
Large standard releases let a mill or distributor spread order entry, setup, packaging and freight over more kilograms. That advantage weakens when an order contains many gauges, short releases or demanding flatness and surface requirements.
A high per-kilogram rate can still reduce total cash use if it prevents buying an entire sheet or lot. Retail also transfers the risk of slow-moving sizes, drops, storage damage and working capital to the seller.
A service center can sit between the two extremes: scheduled stock, traceability, shearing or sawing, local delivery and credit—without mill-scale commitments. For many job shops, this is the economic middle ground.
Wholesale, distributor, service center or retail: which route fits?
Minimum order quantities and lead times are supplier-specific, so the bands below are planning signals rather than universal rules. Use them to decide who belongs on the RFQ list.

Build the comparable quote
All per-tonne values use metric tonnes. Currency is a display label only; the calculator does not perform foreign-exchange conversion.
The lowest delivered sheet cost may not produce the lowest part cost.
Buying teams often stop at delivered dollars per kilogram. Production consumes usable blanks, not gross sheet weight. Nesting loss, protective-film damage, flatness problems, rework, certificate rejection and offcut recovery belong in the same comparison.
A lower material rate can be erased by poor yield, unstable thickness, scratches, distortion or machining interruptions. Ask production and quality teams to approve the commercial comparison.

Calculate sheet weight consistently
For a planning estimate, use: length (m) × width (m) × thickness (mm) × 2.70 = kilograms. The Aluminum Association lists a nominal density of 2.70 g/cm³ for 6061. Confirm whether the supplier invoices theoretical weight, scale weight or a contractual conversion factor.
Example: 1.219 m × 2.438 m × 3.175 mm × 2.70 ≈ 25.46 kg. Small differences in nominal dimensions, thickness and density conventions explain why two product tables may show slightly different sheet weights.
Convert gross material into usable output
If delivered material costs $7/kg and your usable nesting yield is 80%, one usable kilogram requires 1.25 kg of sheet. With no scrap credit, material cost becomes $8.75 per usable kilogram. If the 0.25 kg of clean offcut earns $1.20/kg, the net becomes $8.45—not $7.
This is why a cut-to-size retail blank can beat a cheaper full sheet for a prototype: the seller carries the unusable remainder. For repeat production, buying full sheets can win once nesting and scrap recovery are controlled.
Why small-quantity 6061 can cost many times the metal benchmark
The seller is not delivering primary aluminum. It is delivering the correct alloy and temper, in stock, cut or packed for your order, with administration, traceability and a usable route to your receiving door.
A distributor finances many thicknesses and sheet sizes that may sit for months. The retail premium pays for availability and transfers obsolescence risk away from the buyer.
A custom blank consumes saw, shear, waterjet or laser time and may leave a drop that cannot be sold quickly. Compare the charged gross material, finished blank weight and whether the seller retains the remnant.
Order entry, picking, certificate retrieval, packaging and invoicing take similar administrative time whether the order weighs 20 kg or 2,000 kg. Minimum charges are therefore most visible on small orders.
Sheet needs edge protection, moisture control and support against bending. Residential liftgate, limited-access delivery, long-length freight and crating can dominate a light or oversized order.
Next-day stock and the ability to buy exactly one piece have real economic value when an idle production line, prototype milestone or repair deadline costs more than the material premium.
Forecast the cost stack, not one permanent price.
A responsible 6061 sheet forecast separates variables instead of declaring one number for the whole year. Update the metal benchmark, regional premium and conversion component independently; then stress-test freight, tariff and yield.
Metal benchmark
The LME states that its official price is used as a global reference for physical contracts. The July 21, 2026 cash ask of $3,105.50/t is a dated anchor, not a finished-sheet forecast. Replace it in the calculator with the settlement or contractual average defined in your RFQ.
Regional premium and conversion
Physical availability, freight, energy, alloying, rolling capacity, gauge, width, heat treatment and order mix can move even if LME is flat. Ask suppliers to identify what is fixed, what floats and which publication date sets each index.
Policy and carbon cost
Import measures can change by HTS classification, origin, entry date and content. In the EU, CBAM entered its definitive period on January 1, 2026, so embedded-emissions data and certificate exposure now belong in the sourcing conversation for covered aluminum goods.
U.S. Section 232 measures changed repeatedly in 2025 and 2026, including proclamations dated April 2, June 1 and July 20, 2026. The applicable treatment depends on the exact tariff line, origin, content, entry date and any special arrangement. Ask a licensed customs broker to classify the product before placing the purchase order.

Use scenarios to set an RFQ range—not to predict one exact price.
Run at least three versions of the calculator. The goal is to reveal which input threatens the business case and which contract clause should control it.
Useful when evaluating how quickly a fixed all-in quote should reset if the benchmark falls. Check whether the supplier passes through decreases as clearly as increases.
Use the dated index and written supplier components. Add verified freight, duty and realistic yield. This should become the approved purchase-order baseline.
Tests working-capital exposure and customer-price risk. If the outcome is unacceptable, consider staged fixing, a cap/collar, alternate origin or smaller scheduled releases.
Write the same 6061 requirement into every RFQ.
ASTM B209/B209M covers aluminum and aluminum-alloy flat sheet, coiled sheet and plate across listed alloys and tempers. A supplier saying “6061 sheet” has not yet confirmed the dimensional, surface, certification or packaging scope that determines price and usability.
State 6061-T6 or the drawing-required condition, the applicable specification and whether substitutions need written engineering approval.
Use actual units and tolerances. “3 mm” and “0.125 in” are not the same product, and tolerance affects both fit and invoiced weight.
Machined panels may need tighter flatness or plate products selected for stability. Do not choose T651 simply because a source claims it is cheaper; temper and product form must fit the design.
Define mill finish, cosmetic face, scratches, water staining, film side, film type and whether adhesive residue is acceptable after cutting.
State the exact test report or compliance document required, heat/lot traceability, country of melt/manufacture and any customer-specific format.
Specify pallet support, edge protection, moisture barrier, maximum bundle weight, destination, unloading method and Incoterms 2020 named place.
Rolling route, gauge reduction, tempering and surface treatment influence capability, lead time and cost beyond the primary metal benchmark.

Do not substitute 6061 for price alone.
An alloy change is an engineering decision with commercial consequences. Formability, strength, corrosion environment, fatigue, joining, heat treatment, anodizing appearance and the governing drawing matter more than the per-kilogram quote.

Any substitution should be approved by the responsible engineer and customer. Recalculate strength, stiffness, corrosion, joining, bend radius, finish, fatigue and certification before releasing the purchase order.
Buy 6061 sheet with a repeatable pricing method.
The best procurement structure depends on forecast reliability. A fully fixed price is not automatically safer; it may contain a large risk buffer. An index formula is not automatically cheaper; poorly defined dates and premiums can shift risk back to the buyer.
LME-plus formula
Define the exact metal reference, averaging period, regional premium, conversion fee, currency and reset date. Include symmetric treatment for increases and decreases. The formula should be auditable from a published or licensed data source.
Blanket PO with releases
Commit a realistic annual volume while releasing monthly or quarterly. Clarify ownership of stock, cancellation, minimum release, aged inventory, storage, forecast tolerance and price treatment if demand moves outside the band.
Dual-source qualification
Qualify two suppliers before the disruption occurs. Compare the same drawing, lot, certificate and acceptance test. A second source is useful only if it can actually deliver approved material within the required lead time.
Fixed / floating split
Fix the volume that is genuinely committed and leave uncertain demand on an indexed or spot basis. This reduces the risk of overbuying while still protecting the program from a sudden benchmark move.
Vendor-managed inventory
Where suppliers support it, consignment or VMI can improve availability without transferring all inventory to the buyer. Define consumption measurement, liability, cycle counts, obsolescence and service-level targets.
Mixed-load planning
Combining compatible 6061 sizes or other approved alloys may improve freight utilization, but do not let consolidation create traceability mistakes or force unnecessary stock. Model working capital and shelf time.

A detailed RFQ does more than prevent hidden charges. It reveals whether the supplier understands the application, controls traceability and can deliver a repeatable product after the first attractive quote.
Confirm 6061, temper, sheet versus plate, standard and whether the material is coil-cut or purpose-produced.
State thickness, width, length, edge condition and tolerances in the same unit system.
Ask whether billing uses scale weight, theoretical weight, minimum billable area or original master-sheet weight.
Define test report, lot link, country-of-origin evidence and any aerospace, customer or quality-system requirement.
Name the index, premium publication, averaging window, currency date and effective shipment or booking date.
Separate cutting, film, deburring, inspection, packaging, certification retrieval and minimum handling.
“FOB” or “CIF” without the named port/place and Incoterms edition leaves a major cost boundary unclear.
Confirm importer of record, broker, HTS code, origin, declared value and evidence for any special treatment.
Separate production, ocean/road transit, customs and local delivery; define when the clock starts.
Define incoming checks, sampling, nonconformance response, return freight and replacement timing.
Clarify whether the buyer pays for and receives drops, or buys only net finished blanks.
State validity, index movement trigger, cancellation, restocking, blanket release and aged-stock rules.
Pause the order when the low price depends on missing information.
The quote cannot be compared until the required condition, dimensions, tolerance, surface and certificate are written.
Convert the line to price per kilogram, then verify dimensions and whether invoice weight includes the master-sheet remnant.
Tariff treatment is not a generic country surcharge. It depends on classification, origin, content, date and current legal measures.
The delivery boundary, insurance, customs clearance, terminal charges and inland freight remain ambiguous.
