Why do identical-looking online prices vary so much?
One offer may include free shipping but carry a higher material price. Another may be local pickup. One sheet may have mill-applied No. 4 with PVC; another may be service-center polished or sold without a material test report. Before calling one supplier cheaper, add freight, minimum-order fees, tax, cutting, film and packaging—and confirm the surface and certification are truly equivalent.

Seven factors that change the delivered price
Ask suppliers to expose these line items or hold them constant across quotes. That turns a vague “sheet price” into a purchasing decision you can audit.
Thickness and actual weight
More thickness means more chromium-nickel stainless per panel. Confirm whether the quote is per sheet, per pound, theoretical weight or actual scale weight.
Mill or polished finish
No. 4 and mirror finishes add processing, handling and cosmetic risk. Grain consistency and PVC protection can matter as much as the named finish.
Quantity and release schedule
Price breaks depend on stock position, coil yield, pallet quantity, payment terms and whether all sheets ship together. There is no universal 10-sheet discount.
MTR, origin and traceability
ASTM specification, heat-lot control, domestic-content rules, DFARS or project documentation can reduce sourcing options and change lead time.
Cutting, deburring and film
Shearing, laser blanking, leveling, edge finishing, holes, grain direction and special film should be quoted separately from raw sheet.
Crating and freight
A 4×8 panel is awkward parcel freight. Flat protection, skid size, delivery appointment, liftgate and damage liability can materially change landed cost.
Base price, alloy surcharge and regional trade cost
Stainless quotes can move as nickel, chromium, energy, mill availability, currency and trade measures change. Request a quote validity date and ask whether the alloy surcharge is fixed at order entry, shipment or invoice.
Visual acceptance needs a reference.
A named finish does not define every cosmetic detail. Agree on grain direction, roughness or comparison sample, film type and which side is presentation quality.
2B vs No. 4 vs BA vs No. 8 mirror
Finish premiums are supplier-, thickness- and quantity-specific. Avoid publishing a universal percentage. Instead, quote the exact finish and ask whether it is mill-produced, service-center processed or third-party polished.
General-purpose cold-rolled finish. A practical baseline for hidden parts, further polishing, many welded fabrications and applications where a directional decorative grain is unnecessary.
Directional brushed or polished finish, commonly made with a 120–150 mesh abrasive route. Specify grain direction and presentation side for kitchens, panels and visible equipment.
Bright annealed surface produced in a controlled atmosphere. Smoother and brighter than 2B, but not automatically equivalent to a polished mirror.
Highly reflective finish produced through progressively finer polishing and buffing. It usually demands stricter handling, surface protection and cosmetic inspection.

“Bulk discount” is not a standard percentage. Suppliers price the opportunity created by quantity, repeatability, coil yield, release timing, payment and logistics.

A 48 × 96 in panel is too large for ordinary parcel handling. Thin sheet also needs flat support and surface protection. A good material quote therefore states packaging and delivery terms, not only an ex-works sheet price.
- Packaging: flat skid or crate, corner protection, interleaving, top sheet and moisture protection.
- Handling: forklift access, liftgate, dock appointment, unloading responsibility and maximum skid weight.
- Damage control: who owns dents, bent corners, scratches, wet packaging and concealed freight damage?
- Order strategy: compare one consolidated shipment against multiple releases, local pickup and supplier-owned inventory.
- Cosmetic sheet: confirm PVC type, one-side or two-side protection and whether laser-safe film is required.
Why nickel, surcharges and trade rules move quotes
304 contains nickel and chromium, so stainless prices do not behave like plain carbon sheet. But no single metal percentage explains the entire invoice.
Nickel is a major input
LME nickel is a global reference used in physical contracts and risk management. It influences stainless economics, but finished-sheet price also includes chromium, scrap, energy and conversion.
Alloy surcharge timing
Ask which month’s surcharge applies and when it becomes fixed. A quote submitted today may use a different surcharge at shipment unless the commercial terms say otherwise.
Origin and classification
U.S. Section 232 measures were modified again in 2026. Actual duty depends on origin, HTS classification and product scope, so confirm current treatment with the importer or customs professional.

304 vs 304L—and what the standards actually do
Grade selection should follow the design, corrosion exposure, welding procedure and project specification. Thickness by itself does not make 304L mandatory.
304 and 304L
304L limits carbon more tightly, helping reduce sensitization risk in welded service. Many commercial products are dual-certified 304/304L, but the purchase order and MTR must confirm what is supplied. Do not substitute grades solely on website wording.

ASTM A240 and A480
ASTM A240 covers chromium and chromium-nickel stainless plate, sheet and strip for pressure vessels and general applications. ASTM A480 provides general requirements for flat-rolled stainless products, including ordering and dimensional provisions.
